Mountain hike ⛰️

17th Jun 2025

As intrepid mountain explorers, we tasted wood sorrel (a taste like apple skin🍏) and nettles. After walking a little further we handled and smelt Sphagnum moss - used to treat wounds due to its antiseptic properties.

We had some clean spring water to refresh ourselves before heading onto the “Devil’s Alley” where (according to Leader Chris!) nothing grows and there is no sound from nature! Some children reported hearing footsteps and a horse whinnying - Chris and Steve then told us about the story of the White Witch and the devil’s child, stolen one night almost 200 years ago by a black hooded figure on horseback - was it just a coincidence that we had heard these sounds?!

We heard about the Cloughmor Stone - which allegedly killed Finn McCool. Legend has it he lay down as he died and the hills and mountains grew up around him - now known as the Cooley Mountains ⛰️
